The Influence Of Our Social Environment

Our social environment has a powerful influence on us. Behaviour is contagious. We tend to conform to our social environment because we want to fit in. Sometimes, we even defer to those around us because we think the group is more informed than we are.

Today we're all immersed in selfishness, seeking to benefit ourselves with no regard for others. This means we're conforming to a social environment that has negative, destructive and even dangerous behaviour. Here are a few examples:
  • Materialism: We buy because others buy, because we don't want to be left behind.
  • Riots: We loot because others loot, because we don't want to miss out.
  • Guns: We carry guns because others are carry guns, because we don't want to get shot.

We need to change from personal selfishness to mutual bestowal. We need to seek to benefit others instead of ourselves.

If we build a new society that's based on the quality of bestowal, then our social environment would influence us in a positive and constructive way. Conforming to such a social environment would be a good thing because the consequences would always be positive.
